Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program

CELL MECHANICS OF MECHANOBIOLOGY

P.I.: Hsieh
Lab | E-mail

Cells isolated from tissues of the musculoskeletal system, in particular from fibrocartilage and cartilage, form a layer of cell-associated matrix proteins around the cell.  This pericellular matrix has been hypothesized to play an important role in how mechanical signals are transduced to the cell.  Our laboratory is interested not only from a mechanical perspective but also a biological one.  An REU student will have the opportunity to work on a project that addresses either one or both of these issues, depending on his/her area of interest.  Importantly, results of this project will provide insight into optimizing biomedical engineering strategies in tissue repair based on direct cell injections or cell-scaffold implants.
