Research Interests
Dr. Shirmohammadi's interests include modeling as a tool to predict movement of pesticides and nutrients from watersheds in response to hydrological events, ground water pollution and how to prevent nutrient movement into the ground and surface water systems. Field and watershed scale monitoring is used to develop and to validate mathematical models for identifying best management practices. His research also involves interfacing nonpoint source pollution models with geographic information systems (GIS) for pollution identification.
Nonpoint source pollution relates to the pollution of water systems by chemicals introduced to both urban and agricultural lands. To identify the critical sources of pollution in a large landscape is often laborious and expensive via monitoring means. Dr. Shirmohammadi, his associates and students are using both GIS (geographic information systems) and mathematical/computer models to identify the hot pollution spots in any given watershed and prescribe proper management practices to alleviate the problem. They have also undertaken a national monitoring project funded by the U.S. EPA to validate their mathematical and engineering methodologies in the Piedmont Region of Maryland. Both undergraduate and graduate students work on different components of these activities. Learning experiences extend from classrooms to field situations and finally to analysis and implementation tools (math, engineering and computers).
Prior to assuming the role of Director of the Undergraduate Program of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering September 2006, Dr. Shirmohammadi spoent over 19 years of coordinating the advising of the Undergraduate Program in Biological Resources Engineering (BRE), which transitioned into the Undergraduate Program in Bioengineering in July 2006.
Dr. Shirmohammadi has been dedicated to for many years. He was recognized as a finalist for the 2002 Outstanding Advisor of the Year Award by the University of Maryland's Parent Association; was awarded the 2003-2004 Faculty Academic Advisor of the Year Award by the Provost's Commission on Academic Advising; and was honored by the Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar Program in 2004 for his work as a faculty mentor.
