Forcing Functions, Work Flow, and Default Modes: The Role of Human Factors in Medical Device Design

Human factors engineering has largely permeated military, aviation, nuclear, and transportation domains as a critical aspect of the development of safe equipment. Nonetheless, healthcare has been slow to adopt the same state-of-the-art "cradle to grave" design and development techniques that have transformed other high risk industries. While there are many successes in healthcare, poor usability of medical devices has lead to a myriad of problems, such as immense inefficiency, clinician workarounds, and sometimes disastrous errors. This seminar will present information about the current state of safety in healthcare, provide case studies of poor usability of medical devices, discuss the role of regulatory agencies in promoting human factors in device design, and consider the developing horizon for healthcare providers, manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and patients.
