Abstract

This presentation offers an insightful examination of the academic scholarly publishing landscape, with a particular focus on navigating a career in scholarly publishing in today's dynamic environment. Drawing from extensive experience at Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. publishers, our esteemed speaker, Sophie Reisz, will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of scientific publishing. Key topics include emerging trends in open access, strategies for addressing challenges such as scientific misconduct and ethics, and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Furthermore, the presentation will delve into evolving expectations surrounding data management, and explores the contrasting roles of societal journals compared to prominent titles like Nature, Science, and Cell. Through a blend of professional expertise and personal anecdotes, attendees can expect to gain a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted factors shaping the dissemination of modern scientific research.

Speaker Bio

Sophie Reisz is the Vice President & Executive Editor at Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. With extensive experience in academic publishing, she excels in overseeing the operations of over 100 hybrid and Open Access journals spanning the biomedical, biotechnology, and life sciences domains. Sophie's expertise lies in strategic management of STEM journal publishing, ethics oversight, peer review processes, author services, and advancing open access and research initiatives. Her contributions extend beyond her professional role as she actively engages with the scholarly community through volunteer positions at the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP). Sophie has been appointed Lead of the SSP New Directions Seminar for four consecutive years (2019 – 2022) and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the SSP Education Committee, earning recognition with the SSP Appreciation Award in 2021. Residing in New York with her husband, stepson, and newly adopted cat, Sophie continues to strive to make impactful contributions to the academic publishing landscape emphasizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
